House surveys in South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire's housing was shaped by steel in Sheffield and Rotherham and by coal across Barnsley, Doncaster and the Dearne Valley. Sheffield is built on seven hills, with Victorian brick terraces in the east and centre and stone houses on the western side towards the Peak District. Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley have Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and large post-war estates, while former pit villages are scattered across the county. Common survey issues include coal mining legacy, which affects much of the county, river flooding along the Don, Dearne and Rother, notably in 2007 and 2019, steep sites in Sheffield and Barnsley, and non-traditional post-war housing.
