Newham has Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Forest Gate, East Ham and Plaistow, extensive post-war council housing, and major new development at Stratford, the Olympic Park and the Royal Docks. Much of the south of the borough is low-lying former marshland, relying on Thames flood defences.
