Croydon is London's southern gateway, with Victorian and Edwardian suburbs in the north of the borough, 1960s office towers and modern flats in the town centre, and interwar and post-war suburbs rising onto the North Downs at Purley, Coulsdon and Sanderstead. The south of the borough is on chalk, where solution features are found, and the Bourne flow can cause groundwater flooding in the Caterham and Purley valley.
