House surveys in Barking and Dagenham
Barking and Dagenham is dominated by the Becontree Estate, built by the London County Council between the 1920s and 1930s and once the largest public housing estate in the world. Most homes are modest two-storey brick terraces and cottage-style houses, many now privately owned after Right to Buy, alongside Victorian streets in Barking and newer flats at Barking Riverside. The borough sits on the Thames flood plain to the south, and London Clay and river terrace gravels underlie much of the rest.
