House surveys in Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire is the most prosperous county in the East of England commuter belt, with fast rail links to London from almost every town. It is home to the world's first garden city at Letchworth, the second at Welwyn Garden City, and four post-war new towns at Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead, Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City's later extension. Historic towns such as St Albans, Hertford, Hitchin and Berkhamsted have medieval and Georgian centres. Most of the county sits on chalk, with clay-with-flints on the higher ground and London Clay in the south, so subsidence near trees and chalk solution features (sinkholes) both appear in survey reports, as do the estate management schemes in the garden cities.
