House surveys in Rutland
Rutland is England's smallest historic county, with just two towns, Oakham and Uppingham, and a landscape of stone villages around Rutland Water. Its buildings are almost entirely of local stone: honey-coloured limestone, including famous Clipsham and Ketton stone, and orange-brown ironstone, often with Collyweston stone slate or thatched roofs. Large numbers of properties are listed or in conservation areas. The ironstone and limestone geology means much of Rutland falls within radon affected areas, and older stone buildings need careful assessment of damp, roofs and past alterations.
