House surveys in Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire, now governed as North and West Northamptonshire, has a strong footwear heritage that shaped the Victorian terraces of Northampton, Kettering, Wellingborough and Rushden. Several towns were expanded after the war: Corby as a steel new town, Northampton under a development corporation, and Daventry and Wellingborough as overspill towns, each with large estates of their era. The county's distinctive orange-brown ironstone and limestone appear in older buildings, and the Northampton Sand ironstone makes much of the county one of the best-known radon areas in England. The River Nene's flood plain and clay soils are other common survey themes.
