House surveys in Lincolnshire
Lincolnshire is a large, mostly rural county with a remarkably varied landscape. Lincoln sits on a limestone ridge above the River Witham, and the same limestone gives Stamford and Grantham their pale stone buildings. The Lincolnshire Wolds around Louth and Horncastle have chalk and sandstone, while the Fens around Boston and Spalding are some of the lowest-lying land in England, drained by a network of pumps and dykes. The east coast from Skegness to Mablethorpe is exposed to tidal flooding. For surveys, flood risk and shrinkable clay and peat soils dominate in the Fens, while the older towns have large numbers of listed buildings and conservation areas.
