House surveys in Leicestershire
Leicestershire's housing is centred on Leicester, a city of Victorian terraces, Edwardian villas and large post-war estates, surrounded by market towns such as Loughborough, Hinckley, Melton Mowbray and Market Harborough. The north-west of the county includes the Leicestershire coalfield around Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, while Charnwood Forest has distinctive granite and slate. Much of the county is built on Mercia Mudstone and boulder clay, which can shrink and swell, and the River Soar and its tributaries create flood plains through Leicester and Loughborough. Parts of the east of the county share the ironstone geology of Rutland and Northamptonshire, which brings radon into consideration.
